How do I use Ionic Audio's 5V USB to 9V DC Converter to power my pedals? 

Our converter takes in power from an any standard USB Type-A port and converts it to the correct voltage and polarity to power your gear. You can use it with your computer's USB port, a standard USB phone charger, or a USB power bank.

 

What is a USB power bank? 

A power bank is a portable battery pack that can be charged in advance and then used to charge your phones, tablets, or other electronics without a power socket. Standard USB power banks typically output 5V and have a USB Type-A port for you to connect it to your electronic devices. 

 

How do I calculate the current output of my power bank when paired with the converter?

When stepping up the voltage of a power bank from 5V to 9V, the output current of the power bank will be reduced by the same factor because the output Power (Voltage x Current) needs to remain constant.

To calculate the maximum current output of your power bank, multiply the max current output of the power bank port by 0.55 (or 5/9).

Example:
For a power bank with a 2A output, when multiplied by 0.55, your power bank will produce a max current of 1.1A.

 

Do I need any special/specific USB power bank?

We recommend any good quality powerbank with a rated voltage of 5V and an output current of at least 2000mA or 2A. You can find the specs for most power banks written on the product or the packaging.

A current favourite are Anker power banks which have a max current output per port of 2.4A. This provides an output of 1.33A when paired with Ionic Audio’s converter.

 

Which output port should I use? 

For power banks with multiple output ports, use the port that outputs the most amount of current, at least 2000mA or 2A. If you use anything less you'll limit the maximum current the device can deliver to your pedals.

 

What does the mAh rating mean for a power bank? Does it matter? 

The mAh rating on the power bank stands for milliampere hour. Without getting too technical, it's an indicator of how much electrical charge your power bank can store. Batteries with a lower mAh rating don't last as long as batteries with a higher mAh rating, but batteries with higher mAh ratings also tend to be physically larger in size. 

How do you pick what's right for you? If you need your power to last you as long as possible, pick something with a high mAh value. If weight and the size of the battery is more important and battery life is secondary, feel free to pick a battery with a smaller mAh value.

 

Help! My power bank keeps shutting off after powering my pedals for a minute or so! 

Some power banks are designed with a low current shutoff feature. Basically, if the pedals connected to it doesn't draw a minimum amount of current (usually 30mA or so) it will shut off to preserve battery life. This might be an issue if the pedals in your setup have really low current draws such as overdrive pedals. 

The easiest way to exceed the minimum current threshold is to increase the current draw of your setup, which you do by adding more pedals to your board with a daisy chain cable. 

Some power banks also allow you to turn the low current shutoff feature off. For example, the Xiaomi Power Bank 2 has a low power mode which allows it to power low current devices without shutting down.

Check with your power bank manufacturer for more details.
